Technical Description
P0017 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor and the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor for the exhaust cam (Sensor B) on Bank 1 are out of alignment. The ECM uses these signals to synchronize fuel injection and ignition timing. A misalignment of just a few degrees between the two sensors will trigger this DTC. This often affects the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system and may force the vehicle into 'Limp home mode' to prevent internal engine damage. The logic is based on the correlation between the crankshaft reluctor wheel and the camshaft pulse wheel.

Stretched timing chain or failed timing chain tensioner (skipped a tooth)
Faulty VVT solenoid (Oil Control Valve) or clogged oil passages
Faulty Camshaft or Crankshaft position sensor
Mechanical failure of the VVT actuator (Cam phaser) or incorrect engine oil viscosity
Symptoms

- VISUAL INSPECTION: Check engine oil level and quality. Sludge or incorrect oil is a common cause for VVT failure. Inspect sensor wiring harnesses.
- MEASUREMENT: Test VVT solenoid resistance (typically 7-12 Ohms). Verify 5V reference voltage at the sensors.
- ADVANCED DIAGNOSIS: Use an oscilloscope to capture CKP and CMP waveforms simultaneously. If the patterns are offset while sensors are functioning, the fault is mechanical (stretched chain).
- REPAIR: Change oil and filter if sludge is suspected. If the timing chain is stretched, a full timing kit replacement is necessary.
