Technical Description
P058C is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the signal from the battery sensor (typically the Intelligent Battery Sensor/IBS located on the negative battery terminal) is outside the expected temperature range or shows implausible performance. The sensor monitors voltage, current, and temperature to calculate State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH). This data is critical for alternator output regulation and Start/Stop system functionality. The code triggers when the battery temperature reading deviates significantly from other ambient or coolant temperature sensors during a cold start or extended driving cycles.

- Measurements: Check for B+ (12V) supply to the sensor and proper ground. Verify LIN bus circuit integrity (check for approx. 8-11V with a multimeter or use an oscilloscope to see data traffic).
- Diagnosis: Use an OBD-II scan tool to view 'Battery Temperature' live data. If the sensor reports extreme values like -40°C or +150°C at normal ambient temps, the sensor is faulty.
- Action: Replace the IBS sensor/negative battery cable assembly. Many vehicles require a 'Battery Sensor Reset' or BMS adaptation using a diagnostic tool after replacement.
