The engine control module (ECM) detects a fault in the signal from throttle potentiometer 1, and the voltage is too low. The fault code is then set.

Poor contact or oxidation between the engine control module and the throttle unit connectors
Short-circuit to ground in the signal cable
Power supply to potentiometers 1 and 2 shorted to ground or open-circuited
Damaged throttle unit

1Read the fault code status with the ignition on and check whether the fault is active. Then clear the code and road test the vehicle
2Check the connections between the control module and the throttle unit for contact resistance and oxidation
3With the connector unplugged, use a multimeter to check the throttle unit supply for a short to ground or an open circuit
4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the throttle position sensor in live data and see whether it follows the pedal. A value that does not follow suggests a fault
5If no faults are found in these checks and the fault remains as a permanent fault, have a workshop try replacing the throttle unit

The throttle angle is calculated from potentiometer 2 instead
If potentiometers 1 and 2 both have stored faults at the same time, power to the throttle motor is cut off and the throttle returns to its spring-loaded position
