The ECM compares the actual idle speed with the limit and sets the code when the speed stays below the limit for a set time. It is a component fault, showing that the idle control is behaving in an unexpected way. The cause may be a large leak in the intake or a blocked intake or exhaust system.

- 4Clear the code and road test the car, or let the engine idle for a while and see whether the code returns
- 5If the code returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the idle control and the intake system
