The engine control module (ECM) checks the P and N positions of the gear selector using signals from the transmission control module (TCM) on the CAN network. The code is set when the P and N signal is missing or incorrect, or when the TCM can no longer reach the ECM.

Open circuit or short circuit in the signal wire

2Check that the connectors to the engine control module and the transmission control module are secure and clean
3Use a multimeter to check that the signal wire between the engine control module and the transmission control module has no break or short circuit
4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the codes in the transmission control module and see whether they also show communication faults
5Have a workshop check the CAN communication and the gear selector if the fault remains
