The rear electronic module (REM) powers the number plate lighting directly from an output. The fault is stored when the module registers a faulty signal at that output.

Signal cable shorted to ground

1Read and clear the fault code, then check whether it returns when you switch the lighting on
2With the ignition off, use a multimeter to check that the signal cable to the number plate lighting is not shorted to ground
3Check that the number plate lamps work and that their connectors are secure
4If the fault remains, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the wiring and the REM
