The transmission control module (TCM) has found that the position of shift fork 3 is unreasonable. Shift fork 3 is one of four forks that engage the gears, and each fork has its own position sensor that reports its position to the control module. The fault may lie in the sensor, the voltage supply or the control module.

1Read out the fault codes from the transmission control module and deal first with any codes that may share the same cause, since a fault in the gearbox often sets several codes
2If you have diagnostic equipment, compare the position value for shift fork 3 with the others in live data and see whether anything stands out clearly
3If readings are within limits, the fault has probably been sporadic; clear the code and road test to see whether it returns
4If a value is outside or at the limit, a workshop should replace the mechatronic unit; a fault inside the control module needs a new, programmed module
