Technical Description
P0480 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a fault in the electric cooling fan 1 control circuit. The ECM monitors the continuity of the fan relay coil circuit or the control signal to the fan module. If the ECM requests the fan to turn on (typically by grounding the control circuit) and detects an incorrect voltage state (Open, Short to Ground, or Short to Voltage), the DTC is set. This can be a simple ON/OFF relay circuit or a PWM-controlled (Pulse Width Modulation) system where the feedback signal does not match the commanded duty cycle.
Possible Causes
Faulty cooling fan relay or blown fuse VIDA.
Wiring issues (open circuit or short to ground) in the control harness
Defective cooling fan motor or integrated fan control module
Corrosion in the fan connector or internal ECU failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check cooling fan fuses and the relay box. Inspect fan connectors for corrosion or thermal damage/melting.
- Measurement: Test the fan relay coil resistance (typically 40-90 Ohms). Verify 12V supply at the relay socket. Check for continuity between the ECM and the relay/module.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Use a scan tool to perform a 'Bi-directional/Active Test'. Command fan 1 to ON and measure if the signal reaches the component using a multimeter or oscilloscope (for PWM).
- Component Replacement: Replace faulty relay, repair wiring, or replace the fan motor/module assembly if defective. Clear codes and perform a road test until operating temperature is reached.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
