Technical Description
P054A is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the exhaust (B) camshaft position timing for bank 1 is more retarded than the commanded target during a cold start. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system relies on engine oil pressure and a solenoid-operated control valve to adjust the camshaft angle. If the camshaft phaser fails to reach the required position within a calibrated timeframe during the cold start phase—often due to oil viscosity, mechanical sticking, or solenoid failure—the ECM logs this code. The logic monitors the correlation between the Crankshaft Position (CKP) and Camshaft Position (CMP) sensors.
Possible Causes
Dirty engine oil or incorrect oil viscosity
Failing VVT solenoid (Oil Control Valve)
Clogged oil passages or VVT filter screens
Worn VVT phaser gear or stretched timing chain

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
