The engine control module (ECM) registers misfires on cylinder 3 that can damage the catalytic converter, and the code is stored after the engine starts. The misfire can make the catalytic converter too hot, and the code shows that cylinder 3 is the one misfiring.

- Poor fuel quality, for example summer fuel in winter
- Clogged crankcase ventilation
- Uneven compression
- Incorrectly calculated ethanol content
- Damaged VVT unit
- Clogged or leaking injection valve

- 1Read the fault codes and trace camshaft-related codes first
- 2Check that the fuel is the right type for the season and that the fuel level is sufficient
- 3Check that the crankcase ventilation is not clogged and that the intake system does not leak
- 4If you have a diagnostic tool: read the misfire counter for cylinder 3 in live data with the engine running and see whether it stands out
- 5Have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the injection valve and the VVT unit on cylinder 3, and the compression if needed
