Technical Description
P0453 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a voltage signal from the Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor that exceeds the expected value (typically above 4.5V - 4.8V depending on OEM). The FTP sensor monitors the pressure/vacuum within the fuel tank to ensure the EVAP system is sealed and to manage fuel vapor purge cycles. A high voltage signal usually signifies an open circuit or a short to voltage in the sensor circuit, preventing the ECU from performing mandatory EVAP monitors.
Possible Causes
Faulty Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor
Open circuit in the sensor's ground wire (causing signal voltage to float high)
Short to 5V or 12V in the signal harness
Blockage in the charcoal canister causing excessive physical pressure
Internal ECU failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
