Technical Description
P0001 is a generic OBD-II code indicating the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected an open circuit in the fuel volume regulator control circuit. This control valve, typically located on the High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP), manages the amount of fuel entering the pump and rail. The ECU governs this via a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal. An open circuit means the electrical path is broken, preventing the ECU from regulating fuel pressure. This often causes the vehicle to enter localized 'Limp Home' mode or prevents starting to protect the common rail injection components from over-pressurization or starvation.
Possible Causes
Wiring harness open circuit or corrosion in the connector to the fuel volume regulator
Faulty fuel volume regulator (Internal solenoid coil failure/open circuit)
Blown fuse supplying the fuel regulation circuit
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) internal driver failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
