Technical Description
P0029 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) exhaust control circuit for Bank 2 is operating outside of its command range or is underperforming. The ECU utilizes a PWM signal to control the solenoid which regulates oil pressure to the camshaft phaser. If the actual camshaft position deviates from the target position by a predetermined threshold (usually >5 degrees) for a specific duration, the DTC is stored. This system is critical for optimizing engine torque and reducing emissions.
Possible Causes
Dirty engine oil or low oil level (clogging VVT passages)
Failing VVT control solenoid (Bank 2 exhaust)
Incorrect engine oil viscosity
Mechanical failure of the camshaft phaser unit
Wiring harness issues or poor electrical connection at the solenoid
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Inspect engine oil level and condition. Perform oil and filter change if oil is contaminated or incorrect viscosity is used.
- Perform a bi-directional active test using a scan tool to command the Bank 2 exhaust solenoid. Listen for an audible click.
- Measure the solenoid internal resistance using a multimeter. Standard values are typically 7-12 Ohms at 20°C (68°F).
- Use an oscilloscope to verify the PWM signal from the ECU at the solenoid connector (usually a 12V pulsed signal).
- Remove and inspect the VVT solenoid for debris or sludge. Clean the internal screens/filters.
- If mechanical operation is compromised despite correct electrical signals, replace the VVT solenoid.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
