Technical Description
DTC P0044 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a high voltage condition in the heater control circuit for the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) located in Bank 1, Sensor 3 position. The heater circuit is essential for bringing the sensor to its operating temperature rapidly. The ECM monitors the current draw and voltage on the heater circuit; if it detects a short to voltage (logic high) where a ground pulse (PWM) is expected, the code triggers. This prevents the emissions system from entering 'Closed Loop' operation in the specified timeframe.
Possible Causes
Short to voltage (B+) in the wiring harness for the oxygen sensor.
Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (internal heater element failure).
Corroded or damaged connector causing a bridge to power.
Failed Engine Control Module (ECM) output driver.
