Technical Description
The P0272 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that cylinder 4 is contributing less power than the other cylinders. The ECM monitors the crankshaft position sensor (CKP) to measure the rotational acceleration of the crankshaft during the power stroke of each cylinder. If cylinder 4 shows a lower increment in RPM compared to the calibrated threshold of the other cylinders, a balance fault is triggered. This is typically related to fuel injector performance, cylinder compression, or internal mechanical components.
Possible Causes
Faulty or clogged fuel injector (Cylinder 4)
Electrical issue in the wiring or connector for injector 4
Low cylinder compression (e.g., leaking valves or piston rings)
Faulty crankshaft velocity signal or internal Engine Control Module (ECM) failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
