Technical Description
P0497 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an insufficient flow of fuel vapors from the EVAP canister to the intake manifold during a commanded purge event. The EVAP system prevents fuel vapors from escaping into the atmosphere by storing them in a charcoal canister. During specific driving conditions, the ECM opens the purge valve to draw these vapors into the engine. If the sensor feedback (via FTP sensor or fuel trim shifts) indicates a flow rate below the calibrated threshold, P0497 is stored.
Possible Causes
Faulty or clogged EVAP Purge Control Valve
Blockage in vacuum hoses or lines between the intake and the canister
Restricted or saturated charcoal canister
Faulty Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor or wiring issues

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
