Technical Description
P0505 is a generic powertrain code that indicates a malfunction in the Idle Air Control (IAC) system. The Engine Control Module (ECM) maintains a target idle speed by adjusting the amount of air bypassing the throttle plate (via the IAC valve) or by adjusting the throttle plate angle in electronic throttle control systems. If the actual engine RPM deviates from the target RPM by a specific threshold (typically 50-100 RPM) for a certain duration, the ECM sets P0505. This can be caused by electrical circuit faults, mechanical clogging of the valve, or vacuum leaks affecting the engine's ability to maintain a stable idle.
Possible Causes
Dirty or carbon-fouled throttle body or IAC valve
Intake vacuum leak (gaskets, vacuum lines, PCV system)
Faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or throttle actuator
Wiring issues (corrosion or short circuit in the IAC/Throttle connector)
Failed Engine Control Module (ECM) output driver
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check all vacuum hoses for cracks and ensure the air intake boot is properly sealed.
- Cleaning: Remove the throttle body and IAC valve. Clean thoroughly using throttle body cleaner to remove carbon deposits. This solves about 60% of cases.
- Measurement: Check the resistance of the IAC valve motor (usually 6-15 Ohms). Verify 12V power supply and PWM ground signal from the ECM using a multimeter or oscilloscope.
- Advanced Diagnosis: Perform an 'Idle Relearn' procedure using a scan tool after cleaning or replacement.
- Replacement: If cleaning and wiring checks are okay but values are out of spec, replace the IAC valve or throttle assembly.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
