P0506 - Idle Air Control System - RPM Lower Than Expected

Technical Description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the idle speed through the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve or the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). P0506 is triggered when the actual engine RPM is lower than the target RPM stored in the ECM calibration. Typically, this occurs when the RPM drops below a specific threshold (e.g., 100 RPM below target) for a predefined duration. This indicates that the ECM has reached its maximum adjustment limit to increase idle speed but cannot reach the desired setpoint.
Possible Causes
Carbon buildup or dirt in the throttle body or IAC valve
Faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) valve
Vacuum leak (causing erroneous ECM compensation strategies)
Electrical fault, such as short or open circuit in the IAC/Throttle actuator wiring
Power steering pressure switch failure (not signaling load increase)
Internal ECM software error or corrupt idle adaptions

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
