Technical Description
P050C is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects that the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) does not increase at the expected rate following a cold start. The ECU monitors the ECT sensor and compares its rise against a mathematical model based on Intake Air Temperature (IAT), start-up temperature, and fuel consumption energy. If the temperature fails to reach a target threshold within a calibrated timeframe, the code is stored. This is primarily an emissions-related code as the engine must reach closed-loop operation quickly to minimize pollutants.
Possible Causes
Defective or stuck-open thermostat (failing to close completely)
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor providing skewed readings
Low coolant level causing air pockets around the sensor
Wiring harness issues or high resistance in the ECT sensor connector

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
