Technical Description
P0515 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects an electrical signal from the battery temperature sensor circuit that is outside of the calibrated range. The sensor is typically an NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistor located in the battery tray or integrated into the battery cable/terminal. The ECM uses this input to regulate alternator output; cold batteries require higher charging voltage, while warm batteries require lower voltage to prevent gassing or thermal runaway. A fault in this circuit triggers the MIL and forces the charging system into a fail-safe charging mode.

Faulty battery temperature sensor (out of resistance range)
Corrosion in the sensor connector (causing high resistance)
Wiring issues, such as short to ground or open circuit due to harness damage
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU) or incorrect software calibration

Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Inspect the sensor and its wiring for signs of battery acid corrosion or physical damage.
- Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and clean terminals with contact cleaner. Ensure pins are tight and free of oxidation.
- Resistance Testing: Measure sensor resistance (Ohms) using a multimeter. Typically 10-20 kOhms at 25°C (verify with service manual). Ensure resistance drops linearly as temperature increases.
- Voltage Test: Check for a 5V reference signal from the ECU at the sensor connector with the ignition ON.
- Replacement: Replace the battery temperature sensor if it fails resistance or continuity tests.
