Technical Description
P0516 is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects a voltage signal from the Battery Temperature Sensor (BTS) that is below the calibrated limit. This sensor is typically an NTC thermistor. A low voltage signal (usually below 0.5V) is interpreted by the ECM as a short to ground in the signal circuit or a sensor failure indicating an implausibly high temperature. The ECM uses battery temperature data to adjust the alternator's charging rate; higher voltage is applied when cold, and lower voltage when warm to prevent battery outgassing or damage.
Possible Causes
Short to ground in the signal or reference wire
Faulty battery temperature sensor (internal short)
Corrosion or damage in the sensor connector at the battery
Internal ECM hardware failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
