Technical Description
P051B is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects that the Crankcase Pressure Sensor signal is outside the calibrated range or shows erratic performance relative to engine operating conditions (e.g., engine speed and manifold pressure). This sensor monitors the internal pressure of the engine crankcase caused by blow-by gases. Monitoring this circuit is vital for the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system integrity, preventing oil leaks due to overpressure and ensuring compliance with emission standards by detecting leaks in the closed ventilation system.
Possible Causes
Faulty crankcase pressure sensor (internal failure or clogged sensing port)
Clogged or damaged PCV valve/oil separator
Cracked or leaking hoses in the PCV system
Wiring issues such as high resistance or open circuit in the sensor harness
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
