Technical Description
P0521 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the oil pressure sensor signal is outside of its expected operating range or is not performing as expected given the engine's RPM and load conditions. The ECM monitors the sensor voltage (typically 0.5V to 4.5V). If the sensor reports a pressure value that deviates from the calibrated mapping, the MIL is illuminated. This could indicate an electrical failure within the sensor circuit, degraded oil quality, or internal mechanical engine wear.
Possible Causes
Faulty oil pressure sensor (internal resistance or diaphragm failure)
Incorrect oil viscosity or degraded/old engine oil
Blocked oil passage (e.g., at the sensor port or oil filter)
Mechanical wear in the oil pump or excessive bearing clearances
Wiring issues (intermittent connection or corrosion in the connector)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
