Technical Description
P0526 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormal voltage or missing signal from the Fan Speed Sensor (FSS) circuit. This sensor is typically a Hall-effect sensor integrated into the electro-viscous fan clutch, common on heavy-duty vehicles and SUVs. The ECM monitors this signal to verify that the fan speed matches the commanded speed. If the pulse-width modulation (PWM) feedback signal remains outside of calibrated limits for a specific duration, the code is stored. This fault compromises engine thermal management and air conditioning efficiency.
Possible Causes
Wiring harness damaged by fan blades or accessory belt (chafed wires)
Faulty fan speed sensor within the fan clutch assembly
Corroded or loose pins in the fan clutch connector
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
