Technical Description
P0535 is a generic diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that indicates a malfunction within the A/C evaporator temperature sensor circuit. The sensor is typically an NTC thermistor that monitors the evaporator core's temperature to prevent icing. The ECM or HVAC control module uses this data to cycle the A/C compressor clutch. If the signal voltage remains outside the calibrated range (typically 0.1V to 4.9V) for a specific duration, the controller determines a circuit fault exists and disables the A/C compressor to protect the system components.
Possible Causes
Faulty A/C evaporator temperature sensor (internal open or short circuit)
Damaged wiring harness or corroded connectors near the sensor or behind the dashboard
Issue with the 5V reference voltage from the control module
Faulty control module (ECC or ECM)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
