Technical Description
P0536 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) or HVAC control module detects that the A/C evaporator temperature sensor signal is out of its calibrated range or exhibits poor performance (irrational correlation with other sensors). The sensor is typically an NTC thermistor mounted on the evaporator core to monitor temperature and prevent freezing. If the signal is erratic or stays static despite changing conditions, the system will disable the A/C compressor to prevent mechanical damage or ice build-up.
Possible Causes
Faulty A/C evaporator temperature sensor (internal resistance failure)
Poor connection or corrosion in the sensor connector
Damaged wiring harness (short circuit or open circuit) to the control module
Incorrect software configuration or faulty HVAC control unit

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
