Technical Description
P053A is set when the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects an open circuit in the heater control circuit for the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. The heater is designed to prevent moisture and crankcase gases from freezing in cold temperatures, which could lead to ice blockage, excessive crankcase pressure, and damage to engine seals. The ECU monitors the circuit integrity via a dedicated driver; if it detects zero current flow when the heater is requested, the code is triggered. This is an emissions-related code as it ensures proper management of crankcase vapors during cold start conditions.
Possible Causes
Faulty PCV heater element (internal open circuit)
Corroded or loose connector at the PCV heater
Blown fuse for the heater circuit
Wiring harness break between the ECU and the heater element

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
