Technical Description
P053C is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally low voltage state within the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) heater control circuit. The heater's purpose is to prevent moisture from freezing in the PCV system during cold weather operation, which could otherwise lead to increased crankcase pressure and potential engine seal failure. The ECM monitors the circuit via a high-side or low-side driver; a 'Circuit Low' condition typically signifies a short to ground or an internal heater element failure that pulls the signal low.

Wiring harness damage (short to ground in signal wire)
Corroded connectors or loose pins
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or blown dedicated heater fuse VIDA.

- Visual Inspection: Check the PCV heater connector and wiring for signs of melting, fraying, or corrosion.
- Fuse Check: Inspect the fuse dedicated to the PCV heater circuit.
- Resistance Test: Disconnect the heater element. Measure resistance (Ohms) across the pins. A healthy element is typically 5-20 Ohms. 0 Ohms indicates a short, and OL indicates an open circuit.
- Voltage Test: Check for battery voltage (approx. 12V) at the harness connector with the ignition on (or as commanded by a scan tool).
- Advanced Diagnostics: Use a bidirectional scan tool to activate the heater and observe duty cycle or voltage drop; if wiring and heater are functional, ECM failure may be considered.
