Technical Description
P0540 is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that refers to a malfunction in the Intake Air Heater (IAH) 'A' circuit. In diesel engines, the IAH is used to pre-heat the incoming air to improve cold-start performance and reduce emissions. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the voltage and current flow through the heater relay or control module. If the ECM detects an out-of-range signal, such as an open circuit or short to ground when the heater is commanded ON, P0540 will be stored.
Possible Causes
Faulty Intake Air Heater element
Failed IAH relay or control solenoid
Corrosion or loose connections at battery or heater terminals
Wiring harness break or short circuit between ECM and relay

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
