Q: How do you fix fault code P0540?

STEP 1: Check the high-current fuses (typically 40-100A) for the intake air heater system. Visually inspect wiring and connectors at the heater element for signs of overheating or corrosion. STEP 2: Measure the resistance of the heater element using a multimeter. A healthy element should show very low resistance (typically <1-2 Ohms). If the reading is infinite (OL), the element is burnt out. STEP 3: Check for 12V power supply at the relay and output to the heater when the key is turned to 'ON' (engine cold). Verify that the ECM is sending the activation signal to the relay. STEP 4: Replace the faulty relay or heater element as necessary. Clear codes and perform a cold start test.
