Technical Description
P0541 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects an abnormally low voltage within the Intake Air Heater 'A' control circuit. This system is primarily found in diesel engines to pre-heat intake air during cold starts, improving combustion and reducing white smoke and emissions. The ECM monitors the voltage drop across the heater relay or the power stage transistor. 'Circuit Low' typically indicates a short to ground or a lack of supply voltage, causing the ECM to sense near 0V when a higher signal potential is expected during activation.
Possible Causes
Faulty intake air heater relay (internal fault/short)
Failing intake air heater element
Wiring harness damage (short to ground)
Corroded connectors or blown high-amp fuses
Internal ECM failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
