Technical Description
P0546 indicates that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected a voltage signal from the Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor (Bank 1, Sensor 1) that is higher than the calibrated limit. This sensor is typically a thermistor located before the turbocharger or catalytic converter. A 'High' input signal usually signifies an open circuit condition in the wiring or within the sensor itself, causing the signal voltage to pull up to the reference voltage (typically 5V). The ECU monitors EGT to prevent thermal damage to engine components and the DPF/SCR systems. When this code is active, the ECU may limit engine torque (Limp mode) and disable DPF regeneration.
Possible Causes
Faulty Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensor (internal open circuit)
Wiring break or loose connection in the sensor circuit
Corrosion/oxidation in the sensor connector
Unusual: Short to voltage in the signal wire
Faulty Engine Control Unit (ECU)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
