Technical Description
P054B is a generic OBD-II diagnostic trouble code indicating that the Engine Control Unit (ECU) has detected that the exhaust camshaft timing for Bank 2 is over-retarded during a cold start. The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system is designed to adjust camshaft positions to reduce emissions while the engine is warming up. The ECU monitors the correlation between the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. If the camshaft fails to reach the commanded advanced position during the cold start phase, the code is stored. This is often related to oil viscosity, oil pressure, or mechanical sticking of the VVT phaser.
Possible Causes
Dirty or incorrect engine oil viscosity (especially in cold climates)
Failing VVT solenoid (Oil Control Valve) sticking when cold
Low oil pressure reaching the VVT phaser due to sludge or debris
Worn camshaft phaser unit or faulty camshaft position sensor

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
