Technical Description
P054D is set when the engine control module (ECM) detects that the exhaust (B) camshaft position on Bank 2 is more retarded than the commanded position during a cold start sequence. The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system relies on engine oil pressure and a solenoid-controlled spool valve to phase the camshaft. During cold start, the ECM monitors the time it takes for the camshaft to reach its target angle to optimize emissions. If the camshaft fails to advance from its base/rest position within a specific time window, the diagnostic fails. This is often related to oil viscosity, debris in oil passages, or a sticking VVT phaser/sprocket.
Possible Causes
Incorrect engine oil viscosity or contaminated oil
Faulty VVT solenoid (oil control valve) for Bank 2
Mechanical failure of the camshaft phaser/sprocket
Clogged oil passages or VVT micro-filters
Faulty Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Check engine oil level and condition. Verify oil viscosity matches OEM requirements. Perform oil and filter change if necessary.
- Perform a bi-directional component test on the VVT solenoid (Bank 2) using a scan tool. Measure resistance (typically 7-12 Ohms) and check for 12V supply and PWM signal.
- Remove and inspect the VVT solenoid for debris. Clean or replace the solenoid and any micro-filters.
- Measure engine oil pressure with a mechanical gauge (should meet OEM specs, usually 1.5-2.5 bar at hot idle).
- If the problem persists, the VVT phaser/sprocket assembly on the exhaust side (Bank 2) likely requires replacement.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
