Technical Description
P054F is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the engine idle speed is significantly higher than the commanded setpoint during a cold start cycle. During a cold start, the ECM manages air-fuel ratio, ignition timing, and air induction (via throttle plate or IAC valve) to rapidly heat the catalytic converter and stabilize the combustion process. If the RPM remains above the expected threshold for a predetermined period, the ECM flags a fault in the idle control logic or suggests an unmetered air leak. This affects emission levels as high idle speeds during warm-up increase NOx and hydrocarbon output before the catalyst is light-off ready.
Possible Causes
Vacuum leak downstream of the throttle body (unmetered air)
Dirty or sticking throttle body (ETC)
Faulty Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor providing incorrect data
Defective Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system (valve stuck open)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
