Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0550 is triggered when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an electrical malfunction in the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor circuit. The sensor monitors the hydraulic pressure within the power steering system and sends a voltage signal (typically 0.3V - 4.7V) to the PCM. The PCM uses this data to adjust engine idle speed via the Idle Air Control (IAC) or Electronic Throttle Control to compensate for the additional load placed on the engine by the power steering pump during low-speed maneuvers. A failure in the sensor, wiring, or connectors will set this code and may affect idle stability.

Faulty Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor (internal short or open circuit)
Damaged wiring harness or corroded connectors in the sensor circuit
Low power steering fluid level or air trapped in the hydraulic system
Faulty Idle Air Control (IAC) system or PCM software error

- Visual Inspection: Check the PSP sensor connector for fluid leaks (oil wicking through the sensor), corrosion, or damaged pins. Verify power steering fluid level.
- Voltage Testing: Use a multimeter to verify a 5V reference signal and a solid ground at the sensor connector.
- Signal Testing: Back-probe the signal wire. Voltage should increase proportionally with steering load (typically 0.5V at rest and peaking near 4.5V at full lock).
- Component Replacement: If wiring and power/ground are correct but the signal is erratic or missing, replace the Power Steering Pressure sensor.
