Technical Description
P0552 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects a voltage signal from the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor that is below the minimum calibrated threshold (typically below 0.2V to 0.5V). The PCM monitors this sensor to determine engine load during steering maneuvers, especially at low speeds, to adjust the Idle Air Control (IAC) and prevent engine stalling. A low input code usually indicates a short to ground or an open circuit in the signal line.
Possible Causes
Faulty Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor (internal short)
Damaged wiring (short to ground on the signal wire)
Corroded connector or loose pins
Faulty Engine Control Module (PCM)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual inspection: Check the PSP sensor connector for oil contamination, corrosion, or physical damage.
- Voltage Check (Reference): Disconnect the sensor. With ignition ON, verify a 5V reference signal on the harness side. Check ground integrity.
- Signal Check: Measure signal wire resistance to ground. If shorted to ground with sensor disconnected, repair wiring harness.
- Component testing: Use a scan tool to monitor PSP live data. If pressure/voltage is stuck at 0 despite steering movement, replace the PSP sensor.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
