Technical Description
P0554 is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an erratic or intermittent signal from the Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor circuit. The PSP sensor monitors the hydraulic pressure within the power steering system and sends a voltage signal to the PCM. This allows the PCM to increase idle speed to compensate for the additional engine load during low-speed maneuvers. This code triggers when the input signal falls outside of expected ranges or fluctuates rapidly, suggesting a poor connection, damaged wiring, or a failing internal sensor diaphragm.
Possible Causes
Poor electrical connection or corrosion in the sensor connector
Damaged or frayed wiring harness (rubbing against engine or chassis)
Faulty Power Steering Pressure (PSP) sensor
Low power steering fluid or air trapped in the system
Faulty PCM (internal software or hardware issue)

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
