Technical Description
P055A is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) for an 'Open Circuit' in the Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensor 'B' circuit. The Engine Control Unit (ECU) monitors the voltage returned from the sensor. If the circuit is broken (open), the ECU will sense a loss of connectivity. This sensor is crucial for engines with variable displacement oil pumps or complex VVT systems. A failure in this circuit can lead to the ECU defaulting to a high-pressure mode to protect the engine, or limiting RPM (Limp Mode) to prevent mechanical damage.
Possible Causes
Faulty engine oil pressure sensor (internal open circuit)
Wiring harness issue (chafing, corrosion, or broken signal wire)
Connector issues (loose pins or corroded terminals)
Internal Engine Control Unit (ECU) fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check oil level and condition. Inspect the sensor connector for oil intrusion, corrosion, or damaged pins.
- Measurements: Disconnect the sensor. With ignition ON, check for 5V reference and ground at the harness connector. Use a multimeter to check the sensor's continuity/resistance (an 'OL' reading often indicates an internal open circuit).
- Advanced Diagnosis: Monitor oil pressure PIDs using a scan tool. Use a manual oil pressure gauge to verify if the fault is electrical (sensor/wiring) or mechanical (oil pump/bearings).
- Component Replacement: If wiring and power supply are correct but the sensor fails testing, replace the oil pressure sensor. Clear codes and perform a road test.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
