Technical Description
P0569 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an implausible voltage or a missing signal from the Cruise Control 'COAST' switch. The system monitors the circuit via voltage drop or CAN-bus messaging. If the switch signal persists for too long (typically >60 seconds) or if the circuit resistance falls outside programmed thresholds (e.g., outside the 0.5V to 4.5V range during activation), the fault is registered. This usually results in the cruise control system being disabled as a safety precaution to prevent unintended deceleration.
Possible Causes
Faulty cruise control switch/button assembly (internal resistance issue)
Failed clock spring (spiral cable) behind the steering wheel
Wiring issues (short to ground or open circuit) in the steering column harness
Faulty brake light switch interfering with logic or internal ECM/BCM fault
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check for physically stuck buttons and inspect the steering column wiring harness.
- Live Data Analysis: Use a scan tool to monitor cruise control switch status. Verify if the ECM registers the 'COAST' command.
- Resistance Testing: Test the clock spring for continuity while rotating the steering wheel. Resistance should be stable (close to 0 Ohms).
- Voltage Check: Verify reference voltage (typically 5V or 12V depending on OEM) at the switch connector.
- Component Replacement: Replace the steering wheel switch assembly or clock spring if electrical tests fail.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
