Technical Description
P0574 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating that the Cruise Control System has detected a vehicle speed that exceeds the maximum calibrated limit for cruise control operation. This code is typically a logic-based fault rather than a hard electrical failure. The ECM/PCM monitors vehicle speed via the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) or wheel speed sensors over the CAN bus. If the vehicle speed exceeds a specific threshold (e.g., 90-110 mph depending on the OEM), the system is disabled and the code is stored. This can also be triggered if sensor data is corrupted or if incorrect tire sizes cause an inaccurate speed calculation.
Possible Causes
The vehicle was driven at a speed exceeding the cruise control's maximum operating limit.
Incorrect tire size (rolling circumference deviates from OEM specifications).
Faulty Wheel Speed Sensor or Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) providing erratic signal spikes.
Software glitch in the ECM or ABS/ESP module.

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
