Technical Description
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0576 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM/PCM) detects an abnormally low voltage signal on the cruise control multi-function input circuit. This typically occurs when the signal voltage stays below a calibrated threshold (often close to ground) for a specific duration. The cruise control system usually operates via a voltage divider network within the steering wheel switches; a 'circuit low' condition points towards a short to ground, a failed switch, or an open circuit in the signal return, leading to a system lockout for safety reasons.
Possible Causes
Faulty cruise control switch assembly (internal short)
Failed clock spring (spiral cable) in the steering column
Wiring harness shorted to ground between the switch and ECM
Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or software glitch

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
