Technical Description
P0577 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a voltage signal from the cruise control input circuit that is higher than the calibrated limit. Most cruise control systems utilize a resistor ladder network. When a button is pressed, it creates a specific voltage drop. If the ECM sees a constant high voltage (typically near 5V reference or 12V supply) that does not correlate with normal switch operation, it interprets this as a circuit fault. This is often caused by a short to power in the wiring harness or a physically stuck switch in the steering wheel assembly.
Possible Causes
Faulty cruise control switch (internally shorted or stuck)
Short to voltage in the wiring harness between the steering wheel and ECM
Failed clock spring (spiral cable) assembly
Internal Engine Control Module (ECM) failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
