Technical Description
P0579 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an implausible signal or a voltage value outside the calibrated range from the cruise control multi-function input 'A' switches. Most modern vehicles use a resistive ladder network where each button press results in a specific voltage drop. If the ECM detects a voltage that does not correspond to a valid button command, or if the signal exhibits erratic behavior (noise) that exceeds pre-defined performance thresholds, the code is triggered. This usually points to a circuit integrity issue rather than a mechanical failure of the cruise control actuators.
Possible Causes
Faulty steering wheel switch assembly (internal resistance fault or short)
Damaged or worn clock spring (spiral cable) behind the steering wheel
High resistance/corrosion in wiring harness between steering wheel and PCM/ECM
Software glitch or internal ECM/PCM fault

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
