Technical Description
P057C is a generic powertrain code related to the cruise control system. It is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an abnormally low voltage signal from the cruise control brake pedal position sensor circuit. Most modern vehicles use a dedicated sensor to track the exact position of the brake pedal rather than a simple on/off switch. If the signal voltage falls below a calibrated limit (typically indicating a short to ground or an open circuit), the ECM disables the cruise control for safety and stores this trouble code.
Possible Causes
Faulty brake pedal position sensor (internally shorted to ground)
Wiring harness issues (chafed wire shorting to ground)
Corroded or loose connector at the brake pedal sensor
Misadjusted brake switch or sensor (on vehicles with adjustable mounts)
Failed Engine Control Module (ECM)
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- VISUAL INSPECTION: Inspect the wiring around the brake pedal assembly. Look for chafed wires or signs of corrosion in the connector.
- VOLTAGE TEST: Use a multimeter to verify the reference voltage (typically 5V) and ground at the sensor connector.
- SIGNAL TEST: Back-probe the signal wire and monitor voltage while operating the pedal. Ensure it changes smoothly and doesn't drop to 0V unexpectedly.
- SCAN TOOL ANALYSIS: Check live data for the 'Brake Pedal Position' or 'Cruise Control Brake Switch' status to see if it matches physical pedal movement.
- REPLACEMENT: If wiring and power are verified, replace the brake pedal position sensor.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
