Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0580 is set when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally low voltage on the cruise control multi-function input 'A' circuit. Most cruise control systems operate using a voltage divider circuit where different buttons provide specific resistance values and subsequent voltage drops. If the return signal voltage drops below a calibrated threshold (typically below 0.5V when not expected), the ECM identifies a short to ground or a failed switch and disables the cruise control system for safety reasons.
Possible Causes
Faulty steering wheel clock spring (spiral cable)
Short to ground in the wiring harness between the steering wheel and ECM
Defective cruise control switch assembly
Corroded connectors or internal ECM failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
