Technical Description
P0586 is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an open circuit in the cruise control vent control circuit. In vacuum-operated cruise control systems, the vent valve is responsible for releasing vacuum from the servo to disengage the throttle. The PCM monitors the continuity of this circuit. If the PCM attempts to command the valve and detects no current flow or infinite resistance, it identifies an 'open' condition. This is strictly an electrical circuit fault rather than a mechanical vacuum leak issue.
Possible Causes
Defective vent control valve (internal open coil/solenoid)
Connector issues or corrosion at the valve plug
Wiring break in the harness between PCM and valve
Blown fuse for the cruise control system (model specific)
Internal PCM failure

Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
