Technical Description
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0589 is stored when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit in the cruise control multi-function input 'B' circuit. This circuit monitors signals from the cruise control switches, typically located on the steering wheel. The ECM monitors voltage levels across these switches; an open circuit means there is no continuity, leading to a loss of signal. As a safety measure, the ECM will disable the cruise control system to prevent any unintended vehicle operation.
Possible Causes
Faulty cruise control switch/button assembly
Broken clock spring (spiral cable) in the steering column
Wiring harness damage or corroded connectors between the steering wheel and ECM
Internal ECM hardware failure
Symptoms
Recommended Solution
- Visual Inspection: Check for loose connections or damaged wiring around the steering column.
- Connector Check: Inspect plugs for corrosion or bent pins. Apply electronics cleaner if necessary.
- Resistance Testing: Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the switches. An 'OL' (open loop) reading confirms a faulty switch.
- Clock Spring Test: Perform a continuity test through the clock spring while turning the steering wheel. Any intermittent readings indicate failure.
- Component Replacement: Replace the faulty switch assembly or clock spring as required.
Mechanic's Tip
Before replacing expensive components, always double-check wiring and connections. 80% of all sensor faults are actually due to corroded contacts or broken wires.
