P2106 - Throttle Actuator Control System - Forced Limited Power

Related:Throttle Actuator Control System, Wiring harness and connectors, Control Module (ECM/PCM)

    System

    Powertrain (Engine & Gearbox)

    Technical Description

The control module has detected a fault in the Throttle Actuator Control System (P2106). Two sensors that should track together deviate beyond tolerance, forcing a fail-safe for safety.

    Oscilloscope Waveform Analysis

    100 ms/div, 1 V/div
Capture the Throttle Actuator Control System signal through a slow sweep of its operating range. The trace must be smooth with no dropouts to 0 V or 5 V.

    Possible Causes

    1

Chafed or pinched wiring harness along the signal path to Throttle Actuator Control System

    2

Poor ground connection or excessive voltage drop (> 0.1 V) at the ground point for Throttle Actuator Control System

    3

Defective internal output driver or reference circuit in the control module for Throttle Actuator Control System

    Symptoms

    4
Plausibility deviation between cross-checked dual sensors forces protection mode
    Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
    Possible drivability or power reduction
Risk of failing an emissions inspection

    Recommended Solution

    1

Graph both paired sensors simultaneously in scan-tool live data to pinpoint which sensor is diverging.

    2

Verify loaded supply voltage and harness terminal pins at Throttle Actuator Control System.

    3

Check circuit continuity and ground-side voltage drop (< 0.05 V) for Throttle Actuator Control System.

    4

Unplug the sensor:the signal must swing to a known rail. Replace the sensor or repair the wiring based on the result.

    Mechanic's Tip

Always run a loaded voltage-drop test on the sensor ground with ignition ON. A drop above 0.1 V shifts the whole signal and tricks the module into setting sensor codes on a good sensor.
