P242A - Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3')

Related:Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3'), Wiring harness and connectors, Control Module (ECM/PCM)

    System

    Powertrain (Engine & Gearbox)

    Technical Description

The control module has detected a fault in the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3') (P242A).

    Oscilloscope Waveform Analysis

    100 ms/div, 1 V/div
Capture the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3') signal through a slow sweep of its operating range. The trace must be smooth with no dropouts to 0 V or 5 V.

    Possible Causes

    1

Bank 1 specific:Inspect wiring harness to cylinder bank 1 (firewall/right bank, exposed to exhaust manifold heat).

    2

Chafed or pinched wiring harness along the signal path to Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3')

    3

Poor ground connection or excessive voltage drop (> 0.1 V) at the ground point for Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3')

    4

Defective internal output driver or reference circuit in the control module for Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3')

    Symptoms

    4
Control module detects an electrical impedance or current anomaly in circuit
    Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
    Possible drivability or power reduction
Risk of failing an emissions inspection

    Recommended Solution

    1

Cross-swap the component on Bank 1 with Bank 2 to rule out mechanical oil passages and internal timing wear.

    2

Review freeze-frame environmental data and perform fundamental voltage-drop and resistance checks on the circuit.

    3

Verify loaded supply voltage and harness terminal pins at Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3').

    4

Check circuit continuity and ground-side voltage drop (< 0.05 V) for Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGT) Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor '3').

    5

Unplug the sensor:the signal must swing to a known rail. Replace the sensor or repair the wiring based on the result.

    Mechanic's Tip

Always run a loaded voltage-drop test on the sensor ground with ignition ON. A drop above 0.1 V shifts the whole signal and tricks the module into setting sensor codes on a good sensor.
