Volvo models this fault code applies to
This fault code has different meanings depending on model, model year or engine. Select the meaning that applies to your car.
Applies to the following models:
5 modelsC70 Cabriolet (1998–2005), C70 Coupé (1998–2002), S70 (1997–2000), V70 (1997–2000), V70 XC (1998–2000)
What does this fault code mean?
The ABS control module has at some point lost the signal from the left front wheel speed sensor. The fault is stored as intermittent, meaning it came and went and may not be present right now. This usually points to a wiring or connector problem that only breaks contact when the car moves or in damp conditions.
Possible causes
- Poor contact or corrosion in the wheel sensor or ABS module connector
- Chafed or partly broken wiring between the sensor and the module, often near the wheel arch
- Short circuit in the sensor wiring to ground, to supply voltage or between the wires
- Faulty wheel speed sensor
- Faulty ABS control module (uncommon)
What you can do
- 1Read and note the code, clear it and road test to see whether it returns
- 2Inspect the sensor wiring at the left front wheel for chafing, pinching and loose clips, especially where it moves with the suspension
- 3Check that the wheel sensor connector is secure and free from corrosion
- 4If the fault returns, have a workshop with diagnostic equipment check the wiring and the sensor
- 5The brakes still work without ABS, but avoid hard braking and have the fault repaired promptly
Symptoms you may notice3
- ABS and traction control warning lamps on
- Brake system warning lamp may also come on
- The lamp may only go out some way into the next drive, even if the fault has cleared
What the fault can affect2
- ABS and traction control are disabled while the fault is active
- Electronic brake force distribution may also be disabled if several wheel sensors fail at once
